Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, its first folding iPhone and one of the biggest changes to the iPhone’s physical design in years.
Unveiled on September 9, 2026, the iPhone Duo combines a compact 5.4-inch external screen with a much larger 7.6-inch folding display. Apple is positioning the device not simply as another premium smartphone, but as a combination of a conventional iPhone, a larger productivity screen, and an artificial intelligence-enabled personal computing device.
What Is the iPhone Duo?
The iPhone Duo uses a book-style foldable design. When closed, users interact with a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display. Opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch folding Super Retina XDR OLED display.
Both screens support ProMotion adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz, Always-On functionality, HDR, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Apple has also applied a nano-texture treatment to the inner display to reduce glare and make the fold crease less noticeable.
Apple says the Duo measures just 5.2 mm thick when open, while its folded thickness is 11.3 mm. The device weighs 254 grams and uses a Grade 5 titanium structure with an engineered multi-component hinge.

A20 Pro Brings AI and Desktop-Like Multitasking
At the center of the iPhone Duo is Apple’s A20 Pro chip, manufactured using 2-nanometer process technology.
It includes a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says the CPU is up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro, while the GPU delivers up to 40% higher performance alongside improved efficiency. The Neural Engine provides twice the compute capability for running on-device AI models.
The larger display also changes how iOS works.
With iOS 27, users can open two applications side by side using Split View, run separate windows from the same application and save frequently used application combinations. Apple has highlighted services including Slack, Zoom and Netflix as early examples of applications optimized for the foldable format.
Apple Intelligence Becomes More Important
The Duo is also designed around Apple’s expanding AI strategy.
Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI can use information visible on the screen and personal context from supported applications to help users perform tasks. Apple continues to emphasize on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute as part of its privacy-focused approach to artificial intelligence.
This is particularly important because the Duo gives Apple significantly more screen space for AI-assisted productivity, multitasking and content creation than a conventional iPhone.
Camera System
Despite its foldable design, Apple has equipped the Duo with two 48-megapixel rear cameras.
The 48MP Fusion Main camera includes an optical-quality 2x telephoto option, while the 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide supports macro photography. The main camera can also record 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 120 frames per second.
The foldable format introduces several additional features. Users can take higher-quality selfies using the rear cameras while using the exterior display as a preview screen. Duo Preview can also display the live camera view to the person being photographed.
How Long Does the iPhone Duo Battery Last?
Apple uses a dual-battery architecture, placing a battery in each half of the device.
The company rates the Duo for up to 24 hours of typical mixed use, up to 44 hours of video playback using the outer display, and up to 31 hours using the inner screen.
Apple says the battery can reach 50% charge in approximately 20 minutes with an appropriate wired charger or around 30 minutes using compatible MagSafe charging equipment.
iPhone Duo Price in the UAE
The Middle East will be an important early market for Apple’s new premium device.
In the United Arab Emirates, Apple has confirmed the following prices:
| Storage | UAE Price |
|---|---|
| 256GB | AED 8,499 |
| 512GB | AED 9,349 |
| 1TB | AED 11,049 |
| 2TB | AED 13,599 |
UAE pre-orders begin on October 16, with general availability starting October 23, 2026.
Why the Gulf Market Matters
Apple is introducing the Duo while the broader Middle East and Africa smartphone market faces pressure. Counterpoint Research reported that MEA smartphone shipments declined 7% year over year in the first quarter of 2026.
However, its data also highlighted continued momentum in premium GCC smartphone markets. That makes markets such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia particularly relevant for ultra-premium foldable devices, where purchasing power and demand for flagship technology are comparatively strong.
Can Apple Transform the Foldable Market?
Foldable smartphones remain a relatively small portion of global smartphone sales, despite years of development by Samsung, Huawei, Honor, Oppo and other manufacturers.
Apple’s arrival could change the economics of the segment.
IDC analysts cited by Reuters expect Apple could capture around 40% of the global foldable smartphone market by the end of 2027. Huawei currently has a particularly strong position in China’s foldable market, while Samsung remains one of the category’s most established global manufacturers.
The significance of the iPhone Duo therefore extends beyond a single Apple product. If it attracts mainstream premium customers, it could push foldables from an experimental smartphone category toward a much larger premium-device segment.
Why It Matters
The iPhone Duo represents Apple’s biggest bet yet on the foldable smartphone format.
Its importance comes from the combination of a 7.6-inch folding screen, A20 Pro computing power, AI-focused software, multitasking capabilities and integration with Apple’s broader ecosystem.
At a starting price of $1,999 globally and AED 8,499 in the UAE, however, the first generation is clearly positioned at the very top of the smartphone market.
For Apple, the immediate question is not whether the Duo will replace the traditional iPhone. It is whether Apple can turn foldable phones from a niche category into the next major premium smartphone segment.
