Herman Gref Named Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University

admin May 21, 2026

Herman Gref, CEO of Sber, has been awarded the prestigious title of Distinguished Visiting Professor by Tsinghua University—one of the world’s leading academic institutions, widely ranked alongside Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and Stanford University.

The Distinguished Visiting Professor title is conferred upon individuals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to technology, economics, public administration, and societal development. Within global academic and policy circles, the distinction is considered both rare and highly prestigious.

Gref becomes only the second Russian citizen to receive this honor from Tsinghua, following Vladimir Putin. The university has historically awarded similar honorary titles to prominent global leaders, scientists, and executives from major international organizations.

The recognition reflects Gref’s role in advancing artificial intelligence and digital transformation, particularly through the development of Sber’s expanding technological ecosystem and the global AI forum, AI Journey—one of the most widely viewed AI-focused events worldwide.

The announcement coincides with the official visit of Vladimir Putin to China, underscoring the growing momentum in Russian-Chinese cooperation across technology, education, and innovation sectors.
