Indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States resumed in Geneva on Thursday amid heightened regional tensions and an expanding U.S. military presence in the Middle East. The renewed diplomatic engagement comes at a critical juncture, as both sides attempt to bridge longstanding differences over Tehran’s nuclear programme while avoiding further escalation.

According to Reuters, Iranian officials signalled cautious optimism, indicating that progress could be achieved if discussions remain confined strictly to nuclear-related matters and sanctions relief.

Tehran maintains that its nuclear activities are solely for peaceful purposes and insists on the removal of economic sanctions that have severely impacted its economy. Iranian representatives have stressed that broader issues, including missile development and regional influence, should not be incorporated into the current framework of negotiations.

Washington, however, continues to demand robust verification measures and concrete limitations to ensure Iran cannot develop nuclear weapons capability. U.S. officials have reiterated that any agreement must include strict monitoring mechanisms designed to prevent future violations and restore international confidence.

The talks are unfolding against a backdrop of military posturing. The United States has reinforced its regional presence with additional warships and combat aircraft, a move widely interpreted as strategic pressure aimed at strengthening its negotiating position. Analysts suggest this dual-track approach—diplomacy coupled with deterrence—reflects the seriousness of the current phase.

With mediation efforts led by Oman, diplomats describe the exchange of proposals as constructive but acknowledge that significant gaps remain. The outcome of these negotiations could determine whether diplomacy prevails or regional instability deepens further.
