Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday led the funeral prayer for Saudi Arabia’s late Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh.
Passing of a Prominent Islamic Scholar
Earlier in the day, the Royal Court announced the passing of Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, who also served as the head of the Council of Senior Scholars, at the age of 82. The Royal Court described him as a “distinguished scholar who made significant contributions to the service of Islam and Muslims.”
King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman extended condolences to the family of the late Grand Mufti, the Saudi people, and the wider Islamic world.
Funeral Prayers in Riyadh and Across the Kingdom
The funeral prayer was held after the Asr prayer in Riyadh, attended by senior officials, scholars, and citizens. In addition, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman directed that funeral prayers in absentia be performed at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, and in mosques throughout Saudi Arabia.
Legacy of the Late Grand Mufti
Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh was one of the most influential scholars in the Islamic world. As Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, he guided religious discourse for decades, strengthening the Kingdom’s position as the spiritual center of the Muslim world. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in the history of Islamic scholarship in the Kingdom.
